Today's Interview: Perceptions -

Please give a short bio of yourself for our readers.

the basic stuff is, i came out of my mother in washington, d.c. in april of 1981, making me 20, and i now live outside of baltimore, maryland. i'm an only child, and i don't have any brothers or sisters. my mother only has one fallopian tube, so the chances of me being conceived were halved, making the simple fact that i'm alive doubly remarkable, i think.

Why did you choose this username?

i was staring blankly at diaryland's sign up screen, letting words fly around in my head, and the thought came to me that if i were to write about what i experience, i'd be writing about the things i perceive, thus my perceptions.

Your Perceptions-diary is one of the most linked on Diaryland. Your funny and often witty observations are rather addictive, it seems. Did you expect your writing to become so popular? What were your reasons for starting Perceptions? Is it a "project" or a "diary" to you?

to give you a politician's answer, it's a diary project. it came about like this: a couple years ago, i was making a satirical teenage girl's diary (hosted elsewhere), and for research i looked up some real diaries that were written by girls. one of the first ones i found was karen's, which compelled me to browse through diaryland. eventually i abandoned my original idea and created my own, real journal, just to see if anyone would read it. i didn't expect it to become popular; i've never, ever advertised it, and probably i've given its address to no more than five or six people. nevertheless, i got an email yesterday from somebody in gainesville, florida: "i was in a restaurant bathroom today and noticed that the only words on an otherwise unvandalized wall were: perceptions.diaryland.com." i guess that a lot of people use that bathroom.

What gave you the idea for allowing visitors to send you text messages? How many messages did you get?

picture a monkey hanging from a tree, and picture another monkey hanging on that monkey's tail, and so on. now, forget that because it's irrelevant to what i'm about to say.

mobile text messaging was a feature that my cell phone provider at the time offered for free, so i utilized it simply to see what people would say. i'm not sure how many messages i received in total, but i used to write down every one until i got so many that it became impractical to do so. it was surreal to be driving alone at night and hear a beep from a piece of plastic in my pocket to alert me of a message like, "greetings from hong kong."

How important do you think a layout is for a web-based diary? Would you also comment on yours?

if a layout is bad, it's very important. the design of a website should not hinder the presentation of its content. furthermore, i don't think that browsing a site should be like solving a riddle or stumbling through a maze (unless that's the premise of the design, which can be deliberately employed well). too often i'm navigating a site and think, are you trying to give me a headache? to put the focus on the words, my layout is skeletally bare and utilitarian. also, the only reason i have that gray box there is to make it appear that i write more than i actually do. sometimes i'm tempted to play with the design, though, such as by hiding small messages or images in it. once i changed the colors to varying shades of pink.

Many Perception entries are about you being bothered by something (such as people putting hats on dogs). Name one thing that bothers you more than anything in the world.

people who assume that i have no future--whatever that is--because i choose not to attend college at this point in my life. i have nothing against college whatsoever, nor do i have anything against college students, those who have gone to college, or those who plan to. if that's your thing and it works for you, then i'm all for it. it just irks me when people think that it should be my thing, because it's the only thing, and that if it's not my thing, then i'm nothing. i'm just following my instincts, doing what i feel is right for me, and to quote rapper jay-z, "just know i chose my own fate / i drove by the fork in the road and went straight."

When you need to talk about your life and feelings from a personal point of view (and in more than one paragraph), who do you turn to?

you know how some people just need to talk to somebody sometimes? i'm not one of those people. i tend to release feelings through writing or drawing or just driving someplace. it's not to whom i turn; it's to what i turn. i especially like writing, as it allows me to better arrange thoughts and draw more connections between them than if they were only stuck in my head. when they're in your head, you're experiencing them, but when they're someplace else, like on paper, you can look at them from a new, more objective perspective. this also lets you make fun of people who put hats on dogs.

How do you feel about the pointlessness of life?

it's great, i think, because it means that you're not obligated to do anything. i remember a time when my cousin and i rented a jet ski and discovered that it was really fun to go as fast as we could and then take the sharpest turn possible, which would violently fling us off and make our bodies skip across the water. that's not something you could do if there was an absolute point to life. onlookers would be like, hey, stop that, you just don't get it, do you? if the point of life came in a box from a store, i think that it'd come unassembled, without directions. you know, do it yourself.
